Villarreal are well on the way to a place in the third round after a 2-0 win over Torpedo Moscow. The torpedoes this time though came from the yellow submarine's Riquelme, who scored twice in the second half and was a constant nightmare for the Russian defence.

The visitors did cause some problems in the opening minutes, and Reina had to be at his best to keep out an early attack. Floro had to shuffle his side around when Roger limped off in only the second minute, and it was not until shortly before the break that the Spaniards threatened Borodin, Ballesteros hitting the bar in a set piece move involving Riquelme and Arruabarrena.

Riquelme though put his side in front a few minutes after the restart, and that set off a wave of attacks from the home side. Borodin did well to save from Belletti, Sonny Anderson and Guayre, but could do nothing when Riquelme scored again twenty minutes from the end after the defence failed to clear a corner.

The Argentine midfielder came close to completing his hat-trick later on when his free kick was turned on to the bar by the keeper, and he was given a standing ovation when he was replaced by Xisco Nadal to run down the clock at the end. His was the inspiration, and Villarreal keep up their unbeaten home record this season.
