Barcelona were the first
Spanish side to kick off in the second round first leg, and they came away with
one foot in the third round after a comfortable 0-3 victory over Panionios.
Although the Greek side had the first attempt at goal, Kontis testing
Rüstü with ten minutes on the clock, they never came close after that
as the Spaniards took control. Ronaldinho was once again commanding in
midfield, and he had a hand in setting up Luis García twice in the first
half before the winger finally beat Drobny at the third attempt with a powerful
shot which the keeper got a hand to but couldn't stop.
Rijkaard had been under
pressure from his president Joan Laporta to include Kluivert in his line up,
and he half gave-in, bringing on the Dutch striker at the break. And within
around sixty seconds he had his name on the scoresheet, connecting with Luis
García's pass to shoot inside the post. The home side came close to
pulling one back when Rüstü saved from Klimek, but Xavi, Luis Enrique
and Luis García could all have scored again before Xavi finally made it
three with a last minute free kick. |
