Spain are through to the
last eight of the youth world cup after a 1-0 win over Paraguay. Armando
Ufarte's boys were on top for most of the game, and should have gone in front
on numerous occasions in the first half. The South American keeper Antonio
Silva kept out efforts from Iniesta and Juanfran, and when he was beaten by
Gavilán, Oscar Díaz cleared off the line.
Sergio García also
hit the bar with a long shot in the first half, and the Barcelona striker
finally got the goal his side were looking for when he latched on to Juanfran's
pass to score after the break. At first Paraguay didn't react and Spain could
have increased their lead. But they finished strongly, and keeper Riesgo and
Carlos García both kept out efforts, particularly from Dante
López, in the dying minutes.
The youngsters go through
though as Europe's only remaining representative, and they will play Canada in
the quarter finals in Abu Dhabi next Friday. If they get through that one, it's
on to Dubai to play the winners of the match between Colombia and hosts United
Arab Emirates the following Monday. |
