Spain kept alive their hopes
of reaching the final stage of the European championships with a narrow victory
over Holland. After their disappointing draw against Lithuania, the youngsters
needed to win against Ruud Gullit's side and also against Hungary in their last
match to be sure of making it through to Switzerland, and manager Armando
Ufarte made six changes to his side, with four players from Espanyol in his
line up. But once again they were held off for much of the game, and their only
chance in the first half came from Soldado, his shot going just wide of the far
post. A few minutes later though Ribas had to be at his best to stop an effort
from Mathilda from close range.
Ufarte brought on Valencia's
David Silva at the break, and things improved, Soldado unlucky not to be given
a penalty soon after the restart. Silva himself should have beaten Brack with
twenty minutes to go, but soon afterwards he found Tenerife's Willy with a
precision through ball for him to touch the ball past the keeper for the only
goal of the match. After that they could have increased their lead, the keeper
tipping headers from Rubén and Víctor over the bar and
Víctor having goal disallowed. But they had done enough for victory, and
now go on to Monday's game with Hungary in a confident mood. |
