UEFA cup,
quarter final second leg
Neighbours Villarreal
and Valencia will meet in an all Spanish semi-final after both won
through their respective matches. Spain will therefore be assured of one
finalist in Gothenburg next month. (14.04.04)
Valencia
2 - Girondins Bordeaux 1
Valencia cruised
through to the last four of the competition with a comfortable win over
Bordeaux. With a 1-2 advantage from the first leg, Rafa Benítez
was able to rest several of his top players and give a run out to some of his
reserves. But even so they were never really under threat, and Pellegrino put
them in front seven minutes in to the second half when he headed home Rufete's
corner, a carbon copy of the goal he scored a few days ago in the league.
Rufete added a second himself nine minutes later from Angulo's cross, and
although Eduardo Costa pulled one back soon afterwards, the Spaniards could
have won by a bigger margin in the end.
Villarreal 2 - Glasgow Celtic 0
Villarreal reserved
their tickets for the semi-final with a 2-0 win over Celtic earlier in
the evening, a result which sent the 10,000 or so travelling Scottish fans home
disappointed. The visiting supporters outnumbered the home crowd in the
Madrigal stadium, but the locals took the lead early on when Sonny Anderson
headed a long cross from Belletti over the head of the advancing Marshall.
Roger added a second midway through the second half to take his side through to
the penultimate stage of the competition, an amazing achievement for a side
making their first appearance in Europe this year. |
