Copa del
Rey, quarter final second leg
A late goal from
Zaragoza's Yordi on Thursday night was enough to knock Barcelona
out of the competition. A goal down from the first leg, the Catalans made it
all square when Luis García volleyed home a shot from outside of the
area before the break. But with the possibility of extra time looming, Yordi
hooked the ball past Víctor Valdes following a corner to take his side
through to Friday's draw. The semi-finals take place over the next two weeks.

Real Madrid cruised
through to the semi-finals of the Spanish cup after beating Valencia 1-2
in the Mestalla stadium. Carlos Queiroz's side had a three goal lead from the
first leg, and when Raúl ran on to Ronaldo's pass to score in the first
half it left the locals with an impossible task. Xisco did level the scores
after the break when Mista's header came back off the bar, but Zidane settled
it with a last second free kick which took a deflection off the defensive wall.
Sevilla made it
through to the last four for the first time since the early 1980s with a 1-2
victory over Atlético Madrid. The game was virtually over before
it started thanks to the four goals scored by the Andalucians the week before,
but an early strike from Fernando Torres gave the fans some hope. But they
could not add to their total, and after Lequi was sent off for a second
bookable offence, goals in the last five minutes from Baptista and Darío
Silva wrapped things up.
Second division
Alavés reached the semi-finals for the second time in their
history after knocking out Celta Vigo, despite losing 1-0 in their
second leg tie. Celta's new manager Radomir Antic arrived too late to take
charge of the team, but he was in the stands to watch his side dominate the
game but fail to take advantage of their chances. The only goal came from a
Gustavo López free kick midway through the second half which bounced in
off young keeper Juan Pablo. (28.01.04) |
