Champions
League, day 5
Olympique
Marseille 1 - Real Madrid 2
Real Madrid held on
to top spot in their group with a 1-2 win over Olympique Marseille. All
eyes were on Zinedine Zidane, who was returning to his home town, but it was
Beckham who scored his side's 600th goal in the European Cup with a glorious
free kick ten minutes before half time. Ex Celta striker Mido headed an
equaliser in the second half, but ten minutes later Raúl found Ronaldo
for him to poke home the winner. Madrid are virtually assured of first place,
although they still have to finish things off against Porto in a fortnight's
time. (26.11.03)
Celta
Vigo 1 - Club Brugge 1
An injury time goal from
Club Brugge dashed Celta's hopes of reaching the next round and
left them needing a win at AC Milan in their last game to have any chance of
qualifying. The Galicians were dominated by the Belgian side in a rainy first
half, but improved after the break and should have scored when Verlinden saved
at point blank range from Milosevic. Mostovoi finally put them ahead though
after good work from Milosevic and Berizzo, but with the fans already
celebrating a victory, substitute Lange headed Roelandts' cross over Pinto for
the equaliser. (26.11.03)
Deportivo
La Coruña 3 - AEK Athens 0
Deportivo bounced
back from their big defeat at Monaco to beat AEK Athens 3-0 and move
close to reaching the last 16. Héctor opened the scoring before the
break with his first goal for the club and Valerón and Luque added two
more in the second half to keep the Galicians in second place in their group,
three points above their next opponents PSV Eindhoven. With a 2-0 home victory
against the Dutch side earlier in the competition, Irureta's team will only
fail to qualify if they lose the last game by three goals or more. (25.11.03) .
Olympiakos 2 - Real Sociedad 2
Real Sociedad are
also close to reaching the next round after a battling 2-2 draw against
Olympiakos. The Basque side appeared to be well on the way when
Gabilondo put them in front before the break. But things went wrong in a
fifteen minute period in the second half, with Stoltidis equalising following a
short free kick, Kovacevic getting sent off for a rigorous second yellow card
and Castillo putting the Greeks ahead. Schürrer came to the rescue though
as makeshift centre forward to volley home Aranzábal's cross and
maintain the four point gap over their opponents. (25.11.03) |
