Champions
League qualifying round
Slavia
Prague 2 - Celta Vigo 0
Celta scraped through
to the league stage of the competition, thanks mainly to the 3-0 lead they had
against Slavia Prague from the first leg. Miguel Angel Lotina's side
found themselves two goals down with only half an hour gone, Dostalek heading a
corner past Cavallero and Hrdlicka scrambling a second. Lotina was shown a red
card for arguing with the referee after the first goal and was sent from the
dugout, and Mostovoi was also sent off for a second booking after the break as
nerves reached breaking point. Edu, who had hit the post in the first half,
could have put their minds at rest after the break but he headed just wide. And
it was left to Cavallero to keep out the Slavia forwards in the dying moments
to ensure Celta's first ever appearance in Champions League proper. (27.08.03)
Deportivo La Coruña 1 - Rosenborg 0
Deportivo made it
through to the league stage of the competition for the fourth year in a row
after defeating Rosenborg by a single goal. Although the Gallicians
dominated the game they were only able to beat keeper Espen Johnsen once, and
the fans suffered in the last few minutes as a goal from the Norwegians would
have taken them through on the away goal rule after the score-less draw in the
first leg. The only goal came on the quarter hour mark from Luque, who beat the
keeper with a shot into the top corner of the net after Sergio set him up.
Víctor hit the post after the break and Héctor, Luque and
Pandiani all had efforts frustrated before the referee blew the final whistle
to ensure that Deportivo's name goes into the hat for next Thursday's draw.
