Villarreal won their
Intertoto cup final against Heereveen and qualify for the UEFA cup for the
first time in their 80 year history. Having lost to Málaga in the final
of the same competition last year, the team were determined to go one step
further, and manager Benito Floro put out his best available side with
Coloccini playing once again in the centre of midfield. Defending a 1-2 lead
from the first leg, the "Yellow Submarine" were content to sit back and let
their opponents come at them. Even so, the best chances in the first half fell
to the Spaniards, José Marí in particular going close with a long
shot.
It was more of the same
after the break, but Heerenveen did come close a couple of times as the defence
tired. But Reina was in confident form, and saved the day in particular from an
effort by Väyrynen later on. José Mari tired his luck again, and
Belletti could have scored after substitute Sonny Anderson set him up. But in
the end a scoreless draw was more than enough to send the15,000 fans home
happy, and the party went on long into the night. Villarreal are joined in the
first round of the UEFA cup by Schalke 04 and Perugia, who won the other two
finals. . |
