Villarreal reached one of
the Intertoto cup finals for the second year running after beating FC Brno in
their second leg tie. Defending a 1-1 draw from the first leg, the Spaniards
were by far the superior side. However it was not until the second minute of
injury time that fans could breath a sigh of relief when substitute Sonny
Anderson scored his side's second goal. Benito Floro left new signings Anderson
and José Marí out of the starting line up as both were carrying
knocks, and Víctor and Guayre led the attack. But it was midfielder
Jorge López who opened the scoring midway through the first half after
Brazilian fullback Belletti set him up.
Guayre felt he should have
had a penalty later in the half and keeper Belic made a good save from
Víctor as the home side piled on the pressure. But the Czech side came
back after the break, and Dosek almost levelled the tie when he hit the post on
the hour mark. Brno were left with ten men though when Schuster was shown a
second yellow card a few minutes later, and with Floro's men running down the
clock, Anderson got clear to beat Belic and send his side through to a two leg
final with Holland's Heerenveen. |
