Racing Santander dropped out
of the Intertoto cup after losing 2-1 at Slovan Liberec. Trailing from the
first leg, caretaker manager Nando Yosu brought in several players from his
recently returned first team squad to strengthen the side, including Benayoun
and Regueiro in attack.
For a while the Cantabrians
were looking the better team, but ten minutes before half time they were struck
a big blow when Kolousek ran through the defence to chip keeper Borja and put
the home side further ahead. Ironically the Czech midfielder had been linked
with a possible move to Santander only a few days ago.
Shortly after the break
Txiki gave the Spaniards hope when he ran on to Benayoun's back-heel to score.
But Matabuena got himself sent off later on by Ukranian referee Igorj
Ishchenko, and Zapotocny headed the winner soon afterwards.
Nando brought on
reinforcements, but any chance of a fight back came to an end when Txiki was
also sent off after picking up a second yellow card, leaving Racing with nine
men. With a battle going on for possession of the club between Dmitri Piterman
and Santiago Díaz, Racing now face an uncertain future, and this defeat
will not help. |
