Deportivo La Coruña are out of the Champions' League after losing at home to Porto. Irureta's side were favourites to go through after a 0-0 draw in the first leg, but they were outplayed for much of the match by a well organised opponent. The first chance fell to the Portuguese side, with Nuno Valente shooting wide when free in front of goal. But there were very few scoring opportunities after that until Pandiani shot over the bar midway through the half.

Probably the best chance of the match though fell to Valerón ten minutes before the break, a pass back over the top leaving the Spanish international midfielder with an open goal as the defence tried to work the offside trap. Referee Pierluigi Collina allowed play to continue, but Valerón incomprehensively shot wide, possibly thinking that he was actually offside. And before the half time whistle Pandiani also broke clear, only to be pulled up incorrectly this time for offside.

Porto could have taken the lead themselves though when Derlei headed a Carlos Alberto cross against the post immediately after the restart, and only a great tackle from César stopped Derlei from getting through a few minutes later. But César was the culprit on the hour mark when he chopped down Deco on the edge of the area, and Derlei stepped up to convert the kick and score the first Champions' League goal of the season in the Riazor stadium.

Now the Spaniards needed two goals to win, and things got worse soon afterwards when Naybet picked up a second booking to leave his side with ten men. Porto were let off the hook themselves when Nuno Valente elbowed Scaloni in an off-the-ball incident in the visitors' penalty area, neither Collina nor his assistants spotting the play. But although the introduction of Diego Tristán improved things this was never going to be Deportivo's night, and they never really looked as if they were going to get back in the game.
