Real Madrid achieved their objective of finishing top of their group despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Porto. With the side already qualified for the next round, Carlos Queiroz used the occasion to rest Beckham (one yellow card off a suspension), Casillas, Helguera and Raúl and give a run out to some of his reserve players. Even so they took the lead in the ninth minute when a Zidane back-heel pass found Figo, and Ronaldo dummied past the Portuguese player's through ball to leave Solari free to score.

The goal virtually ended any hope Porto had of overtaking their rivals in the table, the visitors needing to score four goals at that point to do so. And they could have gone further behind when Figo got the ball in the net later in the half, but English referee Stephen Bennett ruled it out for offside.

Heavy rain was making conditions difficult though, and Salgado gave away a penalty close to half time when he aqua-planed into Deco, Derlei converting the kick. That was all before the break, and Queiroz decided that Figo and Ronaldo had done enough and brought on Portillo and Miñambres, who was only just back in the squad following a long injury.

Zidane brought a good save out of Vitor Baia in the second half and Cambiasso sent an acrobatic shot just wide of the post, and Bosingwa tested César with a long shot near the end. But the game had long since been of much interest, and both sides will take their place in Friday's draw, Madrid ended the group stage as the only unbeaten side in the competition.
