An injury time goal from
Club Brugge dashed Celta's hopes of reaching the next round and left them
needing a win at AC Milan in their last game to have any chance of qualifying.
The Galicians were dominated by the Belgian side in a wet and windy first half,
with Cavallero saving well from Martens and Saeternes, and Saeternes sending
another header just over the bar.
Gradually though Celta got
back in the game, and Milosevic went close twice before seeing Verlinden make a
point blank save from another effort early in the second half. Cavallero had to
go off after picking up an injury, but soon afterwards the Spaniards went into
the lead when Milosevic sent Berizzo off down the left, the central defender
swinging in a low cross which Mostovoi finished off with ease.
That should have reconciled
the Russian born captain with a crowd who were getting on his back after he was
disciplined by the club for failing to report for duty after the international
matches. But the controversial midfielder, who had already been seen arguing
with his own players earlier on, made a gesture of whistling back at the fans
after he scored, and when he left the field to be replaced by Jandro three
minutes later he was booed off.
The game rolled on though,
and the crowd at last started to celebrate what they imagined was a victory
which would at least assure them of a third place in their group and
consequently a UEFA cup spot. But visiting manager Trond Sollied had one last
card up his sleeve, and he threw on Lange and Roetlands as late substitute. It
couldn't have been a better move, and with the game going into time added on,
Lange headed Roetlands's cross over the committed Pinto for a late equaliser.
It was a killer blow, and Celta now have to win at Milan and hope that Ajax
don't do the same at Brugge to make it in to the play-off stages, a very tall
order. |
