Celta kept their hopes of
qualification alive with a 3-2 win over Ajax, their first ever victory in the
Champions' League. Heavily criticised after their league defeat last weekend,
the Galicians got the start they wanted when Milosevic held on to the ball in
the area and allowed himself to be tripped by Yakubu, Luccin scoring from the
resulting penalty once the protests from the visitors had died down. Milosevic
headed a second from Sylvinho's cross later in the first half, and Juanfran
almost wrapped things up when he headed against the post soon after the
restart.
But the Dutch side didn't
give up, and Sylvinho only just recovered in time to clear the ball off the
line after he deflected a cross from the left towards his own goal. Soon
afterwards Maxwell slipped past Angel's challenge to chip in for Sonck to head
one back, and only a fingertip save onto the post from Pinto stopped Yakuba
from levelling the scores minutes later.
Vagner though restored the
two goal cushion when he rounded Yakuba to slide a shot under Labont, and the
keeper stopped Juanfran from making it four later on. But Van Der Vaart set up
a nail-biting finish when his long, curling shot caught Pinto off guard, and
only when Grygera was sent off for a second bookable offence in the dying
minutes did their challenge end. Celta are now third, and are still in with an
evens chance of going through to the last sixteen. |
