Real Sociedad were brought
down to Earth with a bang by A Juventus side who were far superior to the
Spaniards. Reynald Denoueix surprised everybody with his starting line up,
leaving López Rekarte, De Pedro and Nihat on the bench, and paid the
price early on when the Italians scored twice in the first seven minutes of the
game. Trezeguet started things off after Camporesi got away down the right to
set him up, and Di Vaio added a second minutes later, collecting Nedved's cross
and leaving Potillón for dead before beating Westerveld.
Lippi's side slackened off
for a while to consolidate their lead, but Buffon was never troubled, and
Trezeguet should have made it three when he shot wide from close up. Di Vaio
didn't miss though soon afterwards to head his side into a three goal lead by
the break.
Real did improve after the
restart, with Schürrer heading over, Alkiza shooting just wide and
Kovacevic, returning to the Delle Alpe stadium, failing to capitalize on a
couple of chances. But Juventus took advantage of gaps at the back to get a
fourth on a rapid counter-attack after Nedved found Trezeguet for him to score.
Denoueix finally decided to
make changes, and only a minute after De Pedro came on, Tudor turned a strong
cross from Gabilondo past his own keeper. And the introduction of Nihat a
quarter of an hour from the end came too late to change anything, but he did
have a hand in the play which led to Real's second goal, scored by De Pedro
from a direct free kick. In the end an expected defeat, and the Basques are
still well placed in second spot, but it did leave everyone asking Denoueix,
why? |
