Champions League football came to the Balaidos stadium for the first time ever, with hosts Celta Vigo holding reigning champions AC Milan to a 0-0 draw. There were some doubts before the match whether the local players would even turn up after staging a protest about the lack of agreement over Champions League win bonuses, and all had stayed in their homes the day before rather than spend the night at the hotel which had been reserved for them by the club. But in the end they did turn up, albeit in street clothes rather than club uniform, and soon got down to business.

Lotina once again had to watch from the stands as he was serving another match of his suspension, but he surprised everyone putting out a side without a recognised striker, the only available front man Milosevic starting on the bench. The first chance of the match fell to the visitors, Pinto punching away Kaká's effort, but after that the Italians hardly got a shot on goal. Vagner tested Dida with a high shot and Juanfran struck a fierce volley just wide of the post, and just before the break Dida was there again to stop another effort from Mostovoi.

The Galicians kept up the pressure after the break, and Jesuli fired another effort at the Brazilian keeper. Then Mostovoi got free on the left of the area, but Nesta moved quickly to block the shot. Lotina finally brought on Milosevic, and Ancelotti replied by introducing Inzaghi and the unsettled Rivaldo. But neither keeper was particularly troubled, and when the floodlights partly failed on a rainy night, both sides settled for a point. Celta ended the day in third place in their group, and the upcoming double header with Ajax may decide whether they reach the next stage or not.
