Celta got a valuable away draw in their first ever appearance in the Champions League, although they probably felt they could have done better after Club Brugge scored a late equaliser when down to ten men. Miguel Angel Lotina was missing the suspended Luccin and Mostovoi (and he himself had to sit in the stands serving out the first of a two match ban), and with Edu and Catanha injured he decided to put out a defensive line up with five at the back and only Milosevic up front. Pinto was given the nod in goal, some reports saying this was because of Cavallero's mistake at the weekend, although it appears he will be rotating the two throughout the season.

With Angel and Juanfran playing as wing backs, the Spaniards had the best of the opening minutes, and Gustavo López tested Butina early on. Milosevic should have done better with a header he put wide, and Juanfran and Vagner both went close. Then just before the break Mendoza was sent off for the home side for throwing the ball at José Ignacio after a hard tackle by Berizzo, the midfielder convincing the Greek referee by over-reacting and falling to the ground as if hit by a missile.

Four minutes in to the second half Celta got the goal they were looking for when Juanfran cut in from the left wing to score, and it looked like they were on the way to victory. However with few resources up front Lotina decided to defend, taking off wide men Gustavo López, Angel and Jesuli to put on Jandro and eventually two more defenders, Velasco and Sylvinho. Vagner did his best to support Milosevic and went close himself a couple of times.

But the Belgians saw their opportunity, and Martens gave a first warning with a header over the bar. Then with six minutes to go substitute Saeternes cut in from the left wing and tried his luck. The ball appeared to be going wide, but Berizzo deflected it slightly and Juanfran ended up sliding it into his own net under the challenge of another attacker. Then with the game going into time added on, Martens got through and fell in the penalty area. Everybody looked at the referee, but rather than give a penalty he booked the striker for diving, a second yellow card which left his side with nine men. A minute later the final whistle went, and Celta went home regretting that with a little more effort they could have picked up all three points in this match.
