Real Madrid recorded what in
the end was a comfortable victory over Olympique Marseille, although they did
have a few shaky minutes early on. Carlos Queiroz put out the same starting
line up that had defeated Valladolid 7-2 at the weekend, with Raúl Bravo
in the centre of defence and Beckham in central midfield alongside Cambiasso,
who passed a late fitness test. But although Madrid had most of the play, ex
Celta striker Mido brought a good save out of Casillas early on, and the
visitors took the lead when Drogba took advantage of a slow reaction from Bravo
to drill home the first goal midway through the first half.
It only took the nine time
European champions eight minutes to turn the scoreline around though, with
Roberto Carlos making it all square with a first time bouncing volley from
Beckham's cross only three minutes after Drogba's goal. Beckham shot just wide
and Runje saved at the feet of Ronaldo before Beckham sent Salgado away down
the right to dance through the defence and lay the ball across for Ronaldo to
score.
Madrid's domination
continued in to the second half, with Ronaldo picking up a loose ball after a
good run by Zidane to crash home a third ten minutes after the restart. And
then a clumsy challenge by Runje on Roberto Carlos left the keeper holding his
head in his hands fearing the worst. But although German referee Wolfgang Stark
awarded the penalty, he let Runje off with a yellow card rather than a red.
Figo had to retake his first spot kick as there were players encroaching in the
area, but he had no trouble beating the keeper a second time to make it four.
Queiroz brought on Guti for
a limping Cambiasso and the onslaught continued. Twice within a minute Ronaldo
was brought down in the area, but the referee turned a blind eye to both. But
with the game in the bag they slackened off, and shortly after Casillas was
brought into action to save from Mido, Van Buyten rose to head home a late
corner for his side's second. Once again there were doubts about the marking,
but with eleven goals in favour now in two games, nobody was worrying too much
about that. |
