Celta took a big step
towards the league stage of the top European competition by defeating Slavia
Prague 3-0 in their first ever appearance in the Champions League. The
Gallicians were more than a match for their opponents, and led the game from
the seventeenth minute when Mostovoi beat Cerny with a looping free kick. New
boy Savo Milosevic had missed a couple of chances early on, and he had another
opportunity to increase the lead when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy
before the break. At the other end, Cavallero saved well from Adauto in a rare
attack from the visitors.
Two goals in the first ten
minutes of the second half wrapped things up though, Jesuli catching the keeper
off guard with a magnificent shot from outside of the area, and then Edu
scoring on the follow up after José Ignacio's effort was blocked.
José Ignacio could have made it four soon afterwards, but Lotina decided
that three was enough and slowed the game down. Kuka did have a chance to pull
one back later on for Slavia though, but he was unable to beat Cavallero. The
crowd burst into a rousing version of their favourite tune, the Rianxeira, and
nothing short of a disaster will see their side through to the league stage in
the second leg in the Czech Republic two weeks from now. |
