Boavista win 4-1 on
penalties.
Málaga are out of the
UEFA cup after losing on penalties to Boavista. Spain's only remaining
representative in the competition were defending a one goal lead from the first
leg, and Joaquín Peiró put out a defensive side to try and hold
on to it. However a valiant fight ended when Luiz Claudio levelled the tie with
a free kick in the eighty-second minute, and after local keeper Ricardo kept
out a late effort from Dely Valdés, the game went into thirty minutes of
extra time and then the shoot out.
Ricardo took the first
penalty himself and scored, and substitute Leko put his kick over the bar.
Silva and Miguel Angel both converted their kicks as did the goalscorer Luiz
Claudio. But then Ricardo saved Bravo's shot, and when Goulart struck home the
next penalty it was all over. Boavista join their city rivals Porto in the
semi-finals, and Málaga go home, their first ever campaign in Europe
coming to an end. There will be no Spanish presence in next May's final in
Sevilla. |
