Shot into empty net after Chiotis palmed away Musampa cross.
Spain's only remaining
representative Málaga made it through to the last eight of the
competition after defeating AEK Athens in their second leg match.
Joaquín Peiró's side had been held to a scoreless draw in the
first leg in Andalucia, and the Greeks were favourites to go through in front
of their fanatical crowd in the Nikos Goumis stadium. However the visitors held
their nerve to dominate the opening minutes, and they took the lead on the half
hour mark when Manu turned the ball into an empty net after keeper Chiotis
could only palm away Musampa's cross. With away goals counting double in the
event of a tie,
AEK had to score twice to
win. However despite intense pressure in the run up to the break, with Lakis
shooting just wide after Tsartas set him through, the well disciplined Spanish
defence held on. Bajevic brought on Ivic at half time to strengthen his attack,
and the Yugoslav striker had a penalty appeal turned down by English referee
Robert Styles when Valcarce brought him down. However Musampa almost added to
the lead later on when Chiotis stuck out a foot to block his shot, and when
substitute Petkov fired an effort over the bar near the end the tie was over.
Málaga will play Portugal's Boavista in the quarter finals after they
knocked out Hertha Berlin later in the evening. |
