Málaga were held to
scoreless draw by AEK Athens and will now have an uphill battle to reach the
quarter finals. Peiró's side were the only Spanish club left in the last
sixteen of the competition, and having eliminated Leeds in the last round they
were confident of doing well. However the Greek side are draw specialists, as
they demonstrated by finishing all square six times in the first phase of the
Champions League, including twice against Real Madrid, and they came to the
Rosaleda stadium looking to take something back with them.
The hosts applied the early
pressure, with Dely Valdés causing problems and Darío Silva
wasting the best of seven or eight chances later in the half. However the
introduction of ex Sevilla midfielder Tsartas at the break turned things
around, and Contreras had to save from Borbokis and Kasapis. The Greeks closed
things down later on, and although Gerardo and Dely Valdés shot just
wide, Chiotis and his defence held on to set up a difficult second leg for the
Spaniards. They will need at least a score draw, and with Darío Silva
suspended after picking up another yellow card in this match, that may be a
tall order. |
