Alavés are the first
Spanish team to be knocked out of Europe after losing by a single goal to
Besiktas. The Turkish side came in to the game with an advantage after drawing
the first leg 1-1 in Vitoria, and they took an early lead through World Cup
striker Ilhan Manzis, who caught out a slow defence to beat Dutruel. In the
absence of his goalscorer from the first leg Abelardo, Mané had drafted
Dan Eggen in to the starting line up for the first time this season, and the
Norwegian defender went close to scoring midway through the first half. Home
side keeper Oscar Córdoba had to save twice from Iván Alonso
before the break, and the visitors kept up the pressure in the second half,
bringing on two fresh forwards Ilie and Rubén Navarro for the exhausted
Alonso and Cruyff.
Gradually though Besiktas
got back in the game, and Dobra hit the bar with Dutruel beaten. A few minutes
later Alavés were let off the hook again when Ilhan headed just wide.
With ten minutes to go Ilie had a chance to make it all square, but
Córdoba tipped his shot onto the bar. Nerves started to get frayed, and
the French referee sent off Téllez and Ilhan for fighting after an
incident involving several players. The Spanish side's hopes of repeating their
successes of two seasons ago were dashed, and they now have to concentrate on
getting their league season back on track after a bad start. |
