Denilson. Shot from outside area after Filipescu laid ball back.
A single goal from Denilson
on the stroke of half time gave Betis a 0-1 away win in their first leg tie at
Viktoria Zizkov. The Czech side had not lost at home in two years, and had
already eliminated Glasgow Rangers from the competition, and Víctor
Fernandez took a full strength squad (and around 200 fans) with him to Prague
to make sure. Joaquín passed a late fitness test to play, although
Assunçao and Alfonso did not travel due to their respective injuries.
After a nervous couple of
opening minutes Betis got on top, and Capi and Varela both failed to take full
advantage of opportunities which came their way. However Denilson struck with a
shot from outside of the area after Filipescu laid the ball back, a
psychological goal coming just before the break. Casas wasted a couple more
chances to extend the lead early in the second half, but the home side finished
strongly, with Sebesta hitting the post a quarter of an hour from the end. In
the final minutes Prats was forced to make three or four good saves, but Betis
managed to hold on to take a win back to Spain for the second leg.
