Fired free kick from right of area into top corner of net.
Celta held on with more pain
than glory to qualify for the second round 2-1 on aggregate. Manager Miguel
Angel Lotina was making his first ever foray into Europe, and he decided that
with a two goal lead from the first leg he could afford to rest one or two of
his star players. As a result McCarthy found himself leading the attack with
Coudet and Juanfran flanking Mostovoi behind him.
The Danish side were not
expected to create too many problems, but the dangerous Derveld tested Pinto
with a curling free kick early on. McCarthy got the ball in the net a minute
later only to see it ruled out for offside, and Odense keeper Zaza blocked a
Mostovoi effort with his feet later in the half.
McCarthy and Giovanella both
had shots saved by Zaza before the break, and Mostovoi should have done better
after the restart when Coudet set him up. But another well struck free kick by
Derveld on the hour mark put the home side into the lead, and suddenly Celta
were struggling. However Derveld got himself sent off three minutes later for a
high tackle on Coudet, who was booed by the fans who felt he had over-reacted.
Lotina brought on a fresh
Catanha for McCarthy, and he immediately got into the action, winning a penalty
when brought down by Tembo but then seeing his spot kick saved brilliantly by
Zaza. With the game in injury time Catanha did get past the keeper but his shot
hit the post. The final whistle went seconds later and Celta were through, but
they will have to do better next time if they are to repeat their success of
previous seasons in Europe. |
