Second
division, day 40
Zaragoza and
Albacete celebrated their promotion to the first division with a 1-1
draw on Sunday lunchtime. There were scenes of euphoria from both sets of fans
knowing that their teams were going up, and the game was played in a festival
atmosphere. Yordi and Basti got the goals in the second half.
A battle royal to avoid
relegation in the second division, where three points separate eight sides with
two games to go. Badajoz are definitely down though after losing 2-3 to
Elche, and Oviedo are almost certain to join them after losing
0-3 to Salamanca. A last minute goal gave Córdoba a 1-2
victory at Compostela, and Terrassa stayed two points above the
bottom four after beating managerless Xerez 2-0.
There could be two teams
from the province of Cádiz in the second division A next season. Both
Cádiz and Algeciras won their division 2B play-off games
this weekend and head up their respective groups. (15.06.03)
Zaragoza and Albacete won
promotion to the first division without playing a game this Saturday after
fourth placed Levante lost 1-0 to Racing Ferrol. The only goal
came from veteran striker Cuéllar in the last minute, leaving the
visitors eight points adrift of their two rivals who by coincidence meet on
Sunday lunchtime. The two teams will join leaders Murcia, who were
unable to wrap up the second division title after losing 2-1 to
Tenerife.
It was good day for the
Canary Island sides, with Las Palmas also taking the three points in a
0-1 victory at Numancia. The Soria based side were already safe though,
and they are joined by Getafe, who won 2-0 against Poli Ejido.
The relegation spots are by
no means decided though, with several teams battling it out to avoid the drop.
Leganés took a big step towards staying up after their beat ten
man Almería 0-2 thanks to two first half goals from Calandria,
and they leave their rivals only two points above the bottom four. Eibar
are also in trouble, and although they saved a point in the last minute
with a 1-1 draw against Sporting Gijon, it was not enough to take them
out of the relegation zone. (14.06.03) |
