Champions
league - second phase, day 12
Valencia
2 - Arsenal 1
Valencia qualified
for the quarter finals as group B champions after beating Arsenal 2-1.
Rafa Benítez's side needed to win to reach the last eight, and the
manager put out an attacking side with Carew, Aimar and Juan Sánchez all
in the starting line up. Two years ago Carew had scored the goal which knocked
the Londoners out of the competition, and he was to do it again with a goal
either side of half time. Arsenal got off to a lively start, and could have
taken the lead had Gilberto's header not been headed onto the bar and away by
Vicente. A few minutes later though Aimar put Carew away for him to drill a
shot wide of keeper Stewart Taylor to put his side in front. Henry levelled the
scores four minutes after the restart, but it was the big Norwegian who was
there again eight minutes later to head Vicente's cross down past the keeper.
Ajax's draw in Rome means that the English side are out of the competition.

Newcastle
0 - Barcelona 2
Barcelona made it
three wins out of three for Spanish sides against their English counterparts
after beating Newcastle 0-2 in Saint James' Park. Despite being sure of
heading their group, Antic put out a strong side, with the only change being
youngster Víctor Valdés in goal. However they were dominated by
the Geordies, and Bellamy had several scoring opportunities, including one
which Víctor tipped on to the foot of the post. Barça improved
after the break though, and a dreadful misunderstanding between Bramble and
Given let in Kluivert to score. Then with a quarter of an hour to go Motta got
on the end of Riquelme's free kick to poke home a second goal, and Newcastle
were out. The Spaniards have now won thirteen and drawn one of their fourteen
Champions League games this season, and despite their poor league form, they
could be an outside bet to reach the final at Old Trafford in a couple of
months' time. (19.03.03)
Lokomotiv
Moscow 0 - Real Madrid 1
Real Madrid qualified
for the quarter finals of the competition after their first ever victory in
Moscow. The European champions had never won in seven visits to the Russian
capital, but this time they needed a victory against Lokomotiv to be
sure of staying in the competition. With temperatures below freezing and the
pitch in a terrible state, Del Bosque needed to count on all of his top
players, and he was relieved when Iván Helguera passed a late fitness
test. The only goal came from Ronaldo ten minutes before half time with a
header past Ovchinnikov from Figo's cross. However they were unable to add to
their lead, and as news came in that Borussia Dortmund were winning in Milan,
nerves started to fray. A goal from the Russians would have meant the
elimination of Madrid, but Loskov and Julio César both put shots wide in
the dying minutes when free in front of Casillas. (18.03.03)
Deportivo
2 - Manchester Utd 0
Deportivo La
Coruña won a meaningless match against Manchester United, in
which both managers used the tie to try out new players. The last minute goal
by Juventus the week before had left the Spaniards out of the competition, and
the English side had already qualified as group champions a week earlier.
Irureta gave the striker's shirt to Luque, and the youngster set up the first
goal before the break with a burst of speed which left Blanc for dead before
setting up Víctor for an easy tap in. And then two minutes in to the
second half Víctor got free of his marker down the right flank and put
in a high cross which Lynch could only head past Ricardo under pressure from
Luque. César cleared a shot from Fletcher off the line and Giggs hit the
post as United tried to get back in the match, but the prize money went to the
Gallicians to compensate them for their elimination. If only they had held on a
minute longer in Italy. (18.03.03) |
