Champions
league - second phase, day 11
Real
Madrid 3 - AC Milan 1
A Raúl inspired
Real Madrid beat AC Milan 3-1 to put a foot and a half in the
quarter finals. With their rivals for second spot Borussia Dortmund at home to
Lokomotiv, Del Bosque's side had to win this game to be in control of their own
destiny, and the manager was lucky to be able to count on Ronaldo and
Iván Helguera after they passed late fitness tests. Raúl though
was in a determined mood, and with twelve minutes gone he became the first
player to score 40 goals in the Champions League when Ronaldo played him
through. The Italians came back early in the second half after Rui Costa came
on, but Raúl struck again with an individualist goal, throwing off the
defence with a quick turn before hitting a right foot shot past Abbiati.
Rivaldo headed a goal back from Maldini's cross to give the fans a scare, but
with five minutes to go substitute Guti hooked the ball past the keeper after
good work by Raúl and Zidane to put the game out of Milan's reach.

Juventus
3 - Deportivo 2
An injury time goal from
Juventus substitute Tudor dumped Deportivo La Coruña out
of the competition. With Manchester United already assured of first place in
the group, Irureta's side really needed to win in Italy to give them a fighting
chance, although a draw would at least have kept them in the running for the
second spot. In the twelfth minute they found themselves behind when Ferrara
headed Camoranesi's corner past Juanmi, but Diego Tristán made it all
square ten minutes before the break after Makaay curled a cross into his path.
And then soon after the restart Makaay picked up a long pass from Héctor
and beat Buffon on the turn to put his side in front. For a few minutes there
was hope of a victory, but Trezeguet levelled the scores again after Davids'
pass was deflected to him off César, and with the game coming to an end
Tudor struck a first time volley to leave the Spaniards down and out.

Barcelona
2 - Leverkusen 0
Barcelona are the
first Spanish side through to the quarter finals after they defeated a depleted
Bayer Leverkusen 2-0. After an early scare when Andersson blocked a
Berbatov shot on the line, Saviola put the Catalans ahead following a cross in
from Overmars. Riquelme and Kluivert could have extended the lead either side
of half time, but it was Frank De Boer who eventually put the fans' minds at
rest, his header from Xavi's corner being deflected by Kleine past Butt. With
Inter Milan and Newcastle drawing, Barça are ensured of first place in
their group and a top seeding for the quarter finals. However that may work
against them, as they now have a good chance of being drawn against one of the
other three Spanish sides, any or all of whom could finish as runners up in
their respective groups. (11.03.03)
Ajax 1 -
Valencia 1
Valencia got the draw
they needed against Ajax to stay alive in the competition, and now need
to beat Arsenal in their last match to go through to the quarter finals. Rafa
Benítez's side were up against the wall after losing at home to Roma in
their last match, but they went ahead on the half hour mark with a Kily
González penalty after Rufete was fouled in the area. Earlier in the
game Carew failed to beat Lobont when free in the area, a miss he may well rue
later on as Pasanen headed an equaliser following a corner in the second half.
The local keeper saved well from Baraja later in the game, but it was an
isolated incident as Ronald Koeman's side pushed for the winner. And only a
brilliant Cañizares save from Chivu's free kick stopped them from doing
so. Everything now boils down to the last day, and all of the four sides have a
chance of qualifying for the last eight. (11.03.03) |
