UEFA cup
- third round, second leg
Auxerre
(0) 2 - Betis (1) 0
Betis were knocked
out of the UEFA cup after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Auxerre. The French
side took the lead on the night twenty minutes in to the first half when Tainio
beat Prats from the edge of the area after Filipescu tried to head away
Lachuer's cross. That made it all square on aggregate, and Auxerre got the
winner two minutes after the restart when Lachuer headed home a cross from
Cissé. Home side keeper Cool kept out the Andalucian side in the closing
minutes, in particular making a vital point blank save from Denilson, to spoil
Víctor Fernández's dream of taking his side to a final in their
home town. (12.12.02)
Leeds Utd
(0) 1 - Málaga (0) 2
Málaga were
the only Spanish side to qualify for the fourth round of the competition after
beating Leeds United 1-2 in a bad tempered match at a freezing Elland
Road. Dely Valdés put them ahead when he connected with Musampa's cross
on the quarter hour mark, but Bakke levelled the scores later in the half after
substitute Fowler laid back a cross from Kelly. The English side pushed for the
winner, but it was Dely Valdés again who gave Venables' side a sixth
home defeat with a strike ten minutes from the end. The result could spell the
end for the ex Barcelona and England manager. (12.12.02)
Celta (0)
2 - Celtic (1) 1
Celta Vigo lost their
tie against Glasgow Celtic on the away goal rule despite winning their
second leg match 2-1 on the night. Jesuli gave the Gallicians hope with an
opening goal midway through the first half to square the tie at one all, but
Hartson got the important away goal shortly before the break, beating Pinto
from the edge of the area. The Spaniards scored again through South Africa's
Benni McCarthy ten minutes in to the second half, but could not get the third
goal they needed as Celtic ran down the clock. (12.12.02) |
