Champions
league - second phase, day 8
Real
Madrid 2 - Lokomotiv Moscow 2
Another surprise at the
Bernabeu stadium, where Real Madrid were held to a draw by Lokomotiv
Moscow. The European champions dominated the match, but were unable to beat
the battling Russian side, who were one of the surprise qualifiers for the
second phase. Raúl gave the Spaniards the lead midway through the first
half, but Makelele limped off with an injury before the break and Ronaldo also
had to be replaced at half time. Two minutes in to the second half Lokomotiv
drew level through substitute Obiorah, and with a quarter of an hour to go the
visitors silenced the crowd when Mnguni fired a shot past Casillas to put his
side ahead. The lead only lasted two minutes before Raúl struck again to
save Madrid's blushes, but they have now gone six games in Europe without a
win, and with only one point from their first two games they will have it all
to do when the competition resumes in February. To make matters worse, captain
Fernando Hierro was carried off near the end. (11.12.02)
Manchester United 2 - Deportivo La Coruña 0
Deportivo La
Coruña could not repeat last year's victory at Old Trafford, and
they are now struggling to survive in the competition after only picking up one
point in two matches. Manchester United took the lead in the seventh
minute when Van Nistelroy rose above two defenders to head a Scholes cross wide
of Juanmi, and the Dutch striker got the ball in the net twice either side of
half time only to see the goals ruled out, the first for a foul and the second
for offside. Diego Tristán came on at half time for Deportivo and
thought he should have had a penalty, and Barthez made an important save from
Makaay. However it was Van Nistelroy again who bundled the ball into the net
after Juanmi had saved from Scholes to give his side maximum points and leave
Depor down in third place in their group. (11.12.02)
Barcelona
3 - Newcastle 1
Barcelona kept up
their Jekyll and Hyde act, beating Newcastle 3-1 to equal Milan's record
of ten straight wins in a row in the competition. Their European form is a
complete contrast to their performances in the league, and the word was out
that Van Gaal could even be fired if he lost to Sir Bobby Robson's side after a
bad start to the season. After a 24 hours delay due to a waterlogged pitch the
match got off to a lively beginning, Dani taking advantage of a rare start to
get on the end of Xavi's cross to open the scoring in the seventh minute. The
defence was thrown into disarray though when Reiziger and Cocu both left the
field with injuries soon afterwards, and Ameobi took advantage to level the
scores. Kluivert restored the lead though with his 100th goal for the club
before the break, and Motta headed a third from Riquelme's corner in the second
half to take his side top of their group. (11.12.02)
Arsenal 0
- Valencia 0
A valiant Valencia
held on with ten men to secure a goalless draw at Arsenal. Rafa
Benítez's side put in a tight performance at the back, with reserve
keeper Palop making a series of excellent saves in both halves to keep the
scores level. The Spaniards were reduced to ten men with twenty minutes to go
when Angulo elbowed Cygan in the chest in front of the referee, and soon
afterwards Benítez pulled off Aimar and Vicente to defend the point. The
best action was left to the last couple of minutes, with Palop making a vital
stop from Kanu and Marchena clearing off the line from Wiltord on the rebound,
and Carew going close twice for the visitors on quick breakaways. Valencia have
now drawn their opening two games in the second phase, and are still well
placed to go through when the competition returns in February.
