UEFA cup,
second round
Besiktas
(1) 1 - Alavés (1) 0
Alavés are the
first Spanish team to be knocked out of Europe after losing by a single goal to
Besiktas. The Turkish side took an early lead through Ilhan Manzis,
which with a draw in the first leg was enough to see them through. Mané
drafted Eggen in to the starting line up, and he went close to scoring midway
through the first half. Home side keeper Oscar Córdoba had to save twice
from Iván Alonso before the break, but Dobra hit the bar and Ilhan
headed just wide in the second half. Substitute Ilie had a chance to make it
all square near the end, but Córdoba tipped his shot onto the bar to end
the Spanish side's hopes of repeating their successes of two seasons ago. To
make matters worse, Téllez and Ilhan were both sent off near the end for
fighting. (14.11.02)
Viking
Stavanger (0) 1 - Celta (3) 1
Celta had virtually
ensured their path to the third round with a three goal win at home against
Viking, and they finished off the job in the second leg in Norway.
Lotina was not taking any chances and put out a strong side, and ex Sevilla
keeper Frode Olsen had to be at his best to keep out efforts from Juanfran and
Sylvinho. Earlier in the half Catanha and Velasco had both shot over the bar,
and Juanfran had a penalty appeal turned down. Mostovoi came on at the break
and put his side in front half an hour later following a good run by
Giovanella, ending any hope for the locals. However they did get a consolation
goal in the last minute through Sigurdsson after Celta took their foot off the
accelerator. (14.11.02)
Betis (1)
3 - Viktoria Zizkov (0) 0
Betis ran out winners
of this tie against Viktoria Zizkov by four clear goals on aggregate to
confirm that they are one of the favourites to reach next May's final in their
home town of Sevilla. As with the first leg, the Andalucians scored on the
stroke of half time, this time Gastón Casas getting the vital goal.
Joaquín made it two from the penalty spot on the hour mark after
Fernando was brought down by the keeper, and Víctor Fernández
relaxed, giving a run out to Capi, youngster Melli and then Joao Tomas, who
headed a third goal from a corner near the end. (14.11.02)
Amica
Wronki (1) 1 - Málaga (2) 2
Málaga are the
first Spanish side through to the third round after defeating Poland's Amica
Wronki 1-2 on a cold Tuesday night. For a few minutes Peiró's side
were in trouble, with Gesior putting the home side in front in the tie with a
long shot which took a deflection off Roteta. Four minutes later though
Darío Silva levelled the scores on the night, beating Szamotulski with a
low shot for an important away goal. Contreras had to be at his best to keep
out the Polish strikers after the break, but with twenty minutes to go Musampa
connected with a Darío Silva cross to put the Andalucian side through.
