Pre-season matches
Real Madrid lost 1-2
to Bayern Munich the final of their centenary tournament in the Santiago
Bernabeu stadium on Sunday night. Many of Del Bosque's World Cup players had
only just returned from vacation, and they were outgunned by a side who had
been back in training for several weeks now. Ballack gave the visitors the lead
from the penalty spot after Salgado was ruled to have handled in the area, and
Salihamidzic added a second after the break. Figo got a late consolation goal,
also from the penalty spot, after Morientes fell under a defender's challenge.
Earlier in the evening Liverpool claimed third place after beating AC Milan
2-1.
Barcelona also lost
out in the Amsterdam trophy after Ajax came back from two goals down to beat
them 4-3. Van Gaal's side raced into a two goal lead by half time with strikes
from Kluivert and Saviola, and although Mido pulled one back immediately after
the restart, Saviola restored the two goal cushion almost immediately. However
Barça ran out of steam, and after young striker Van der Vaart made it
all square with two goals in three minutes, a last minute free kick from
ex-Barça midfielder Richard Witschge gave Ajax the victory. Barcelona
finished second, with Manchester United third after defeating Parma 3-0.
