Mallorca won the Copa del
Rey for the first time in their history after defeating the league's oldest
club Recreativo Huelva 0-3. The Balearic side had been beaten finalists twice
before in 1991 and 1998, but this was third time lucky as they dominated Lucas
Alcaraz's spirited team who were making their first ever appearance in a cup
final.
Both managers could count on
full strength sides, with Manzano able to count on Eto'o alongside Pandiani
after the Camerooni federation allowed him time off from the Confederation Cup
(although he had to catch a plane to Paris after the match to play in the final
the following day), and Alcaraz, in charge for the last time before leaving the
club, playing his usual formation.
The game kicked off to a sea
of colour in a packed Elche stadium, and it was the Andalucians who made the
early running. However after Leo Franco made a close up save from Raúl
Molina the game settled down, and both defences held fast.
Twenty minutes in though
Mallorca took the lead after referee Iturralde González awarded them a
penalty, Loren the offender for holding back Eto'o as he ran on to meet
Pandiani's cross. Pandiani stepped up to beat Luque and the red side of the
stadium went wild.
As the first half rolled on,
Alcaraz decided he couldn't wait any longer to make changes. With four minutes
still to go to the break he brought on Xisco for Bermejo, and it almost worked
when the young striker rose to meet Molina's cross to head past Leo Franco.
However Iturralde ruled out the goal as Xisco had climbed on Poli's back to
score.
Nerves started to fray in
the second half, and Pandiani and Alex got themselves booked in an incident
which ended up involving over half of the players on the pitch. But Mallorca
were getting on top, and only a reflex save by Luque kept out Eto'o in front of
goal.
The keeper could do nothing
though only three minutes later when Riera slipped through a pass to Eto'o for
him to roll the ball into the net, and the game was almost over. Alcaraz used
up his substitutions, but when his side did get close to goal, Leo Franco was
there to keep them out.
And then with six minutes to
go Eto'o finished things off with his second goal of the night, collecting
Ibagaza's pass and rounding Alex and Loren before shooting into the roof of the
net. Manzano pulled the striker off soon afterwards so that he could be
applauded by the public, and he looked to the heavens in dedication to his
Cameroon team mate Marc Vivien Foé, who died whilst playing for his
country a few days ago.
Not long afterwards
Iturralde called it a day, Nadal went up to collect Mallorca's first real title
from King Juan Carlos. The victory gives them a place in the UEFA cup for next
season, a fitting reward for a campaign which has seen them eliminate Real
Madrid and Deportivo from the competition. Recre go back empty handed to an
uncertain future in the second division, but at least they tried.
