Villarreal were knocked out
of the Intertoto cup at the semi-final stage after losing their second leg
match in France. Víctor Muñoz's side needed to score after a
goalless draw at home, and their efforts were rewarded in the tenth minute when
Calleja pulled down a long cross from Belletti to fire his side into the lead.
However they were unable to hold on to their advantage, and Ghazi levelled the
scores before the break with a header from a corner.
Things seemed to be going
well when Troyes were reduced to ten men with the sending off of Amzine just
before the break, and Galca struck the bar moments later. But a penalty from
Gousse ten minutes into the second half after a mistake by Quique Medina ended
their hopes, and even with four forwards on the park for the last twenty
minutes they were unable to beat Heurtebis and his stalwart defence.
PS. Villarreal were
reinstated in the competition and will play the final against Málaga
after Troyes were sensationally disqualified by UEFA for bringing on an
unregistered player during the match. The French side brought on Tony Vairelles
seven minutes from the end, a recent signing from Bastia who had not been
included in their registered squad. Villarreal will therefore have a second
chance to qualify for the UEFA cup for the first time in their history.
