Villarreal went through to the third round of the Intertoto cup after defeating Iceland's Hafnarfjördur 4-2 on aggregate. The heavy rain and strong wind caused some problems early on for the Spaniards, and their opponents took the lead when Pepe Reina, making his debut in goal, allowed Arnasson to get ahead of him to score. However Jorge López got the vital away goal a quarter of an hour later, leaving the home side with the difficult task of scoring three times to win the tie.

Víctor and Palermo both missed chances to wrap things up, and although Bett put the locals back ahead in the second half, Galca made sure of the result with a late goal three minutes from the end. Villarreal go on to play Torino in the next round, with the first leg next weekend in Italy.
