López. 2-0. 69. Galván. Header past Laurusson after Palermo
effort hit post.
The season started early for
Villarreal, who kicked off the new campaign with a victory in their first ever
match in a European competition. The Spanish side had problems at the beginning
breaking down an ultra-defensive Icelandic defence, but they opened their
account with just over a half an hour gone when Guayre and Jorge López
combined to set up Víctor to head past Laurusson.
Despite dominating the match
from then on, they were only capable of scoring once more, Galván
heading home midway through the second half after Martín Palermo hit the
post. New signing Aranda should have got a third near the end when his effort
was cleared off the line, but Villarreal should have done enough to finish
things off in Iceland next week and set up a third round tie with the winner of
the game between Torino and Bregenz. |
