Friendly Fixtures 2002/2003

Although clubs have a busy calendar once the league and other competitions commence, there will be several friendly matches whenever time allows. We set out below details of those games which have come to our attention. Please bear in mind that all dates are provisional and are subject to change at short notice. Matches already played in red, games pending in blue, late changes in bold. For summer pre-season games see separate section. (30.06.03)

3 Sep 2002 Lalín 1 - Celta 2
First outing for new signing Coudet, who gave winning pass to Kaviedes in last minute. Catanha equalised just before half time against lower division side, who had taken the lead thorough Angel.
4 Sep 2002 Barbastro v Rayo Vallecano
Trofeo Virgen del Pueyo against local 3rd division side. Late goal by Bolo saved a 1-1 draw, but Rayo lost 4-3 on the penalty shoot out.
5 Sep 2002 Pontejos 0 - Racing Santander 7
Debut of Diego Alonso and Munitis against 3rd division side. Alonso scored two, as did Bodipo. Other goals by Javi Guerrero, Regueiro and Pablo Lago from a penalty after Munitis fouled.
5 Sep 2002 Mirandés 0 - Alavés 2
Played in Miranda del Ebro against 3rd division side. Goals from Mara and Magno gave Mané's team victory.
5 Sep 2002 Málaga v Boavista
Friendly against Portuguese side as part payment of Litos transfer. Peiró gave a run out to a lot of his reserve players, but Málaga lost 0-1, with Silva scoring for the visitors in the first half. Rafa saved a penalty after the break.
6 Sep 2002 Real Sociedad 0 - Girondins Bordeaux 1
Friendly match played in Bergara. Real lined up with several reserve players in their team and lost to a late Darcheville goal. Bordeaux's new signing from Real Madrid Savio lined up in attack alongside Dugarry, and had a good game.
6 Sep 2002 Deportivo 4 - Hannover '96 1
Juan Acuña trophy, Riazor stadium. Played against team who has signed three of their players on loan. One of them, Jaime, gave the visitors the lead, but goals from Víctor, Luque (2) and Capdevila gave Depor the trophy for the ninth time.
6 Sep 2002 Recreativo Huelva 1 - Córdoba 1
Friendly against local rivals, with proceeds to the local charity "Hermandad de la Virgen de la Cinta". A chance for Recre to put out their lesser used players, but they fell behind to a Soto goal and only equalised right at the end through Gallego. Xisco was less than charitable with the referee, who sent him off for bad language.
7 Sep 2002 Alavés 5 - Dynamo Bucharest 1
Trofeo Diputación Floral de Álava. Presentation match for Alavés squad. Couldn't find date before start of season, so took advantage of break for Euro 2004 qualifiers. Goals from Iván Alonso (2), Llorens, Mara ad Rubén Navarro for Alavés, Danfiunescu for Dynamo.
8 Sep 2002 Olympic stadium tournament, Sevilla
Triangular tournament in the Olympic stadium in Sevilla. Teams were missing their international players, playing for their countries at the weekend.
Results:
Sevilla 1 - Atlético 0. Moisés (pen).
Atlético 1 - Real Madrid 0. Javi Moreno.
Sevilla 1 - Real Madrid 0. Antoñito.
Winners: Sevilla.
8 Sep 2002 Celta 0 - Sporting Lisbon 1
Another friendly against Portuguese opposition in Balaidos stadium. Lotina put out his first team for 45 minutes then his reserves in the second half. Luis Felipe scored for the visitors after the break, and Méndez was sent off later on for kicking an opponent from behind.
8 Sep 2002 Os Belenenses 1 - Betis 0
Friendly against Portuguese side. Only Denilson, Rivas and Luis Fernández started the game from Víctor's first choice side. A dull game, with the home side scoring through Marco Paulo early in the second half.
10 Sep 2002 Valencia tour of China
Cañizares, Ayala, Carboni, Djukic and Juan Sánchez travelled out on Saturday with squad of B team players as part of trade visit. Match against Dahe, from province of Chengdu, which they lost 1-0.
9 Oct 2002 Olympique Marseille 4 - Real Sociedad 1
Friendly match played in Marseille. Denoueix gave a run out to his reserve players, who were well beaten, with Bakayoko hitting a hat-trick. Llorente got a late consolation goal for the Spaniards.
10 Oct 2002 Barcelona v Gava
Van Gaal wanted to give a run out to lesser used players while internationals away. Match scheduled behind close doors against 2B side in Barcelona's mini-stadium, but eventually called off due to waterlogged pitch.
10 Oct 2002 Las Palmas 1 - PSV Eindhoven 0
An early goal from N'Kong was enough to give Las Palmas victory in the third "City of Las Palmas" trophy.
11 Oct 2002 Bordeaux 1 - Osasuna 2
Friendly match played in the French town of Saint Jean de Anglet. Bordeaux took an early lead through Fiston, but goals by Rivero and Ochoa gave Osasuna the victory.
12 Oct 2002 Athletic Bilbao 1 - Racing Santander 0
Friendly match played at Amorebieta to celebrate the Basque club's 75th anniversary. The only goal came from a Larrazábal header in the second half. Karanka and Alkiza made their reappearance after injuries, and Messias had a run out for Racing.
13-15 Oct 2002 Espanyol tour of Emirates
Took advantage of break for international matches, supposedly to play two friendlies in Dubai, Al Wasl (13th) and Al Jazira (15th). However only played one v Al Wasl which they won 0-2 with most of their reserve players, Arteaga reappeared and Jarque and Maxi got the goals. Second match called off, as was rescheduled game v Dubai, so returned home rather upset about the whole thing.
30 Oct 2002 Athletic Bilbao 3 - Getxo 0
Athletic final won a game. Friendly against local side settled by Arriaga, Tiko and Azkorra. Alkiza and Karanka both had another run out.
19 Nov 2002 Espanyol 1 - Ivory Coast 4
The Barcelona based side played against the African country's international side in Espanyol B's stadium. Domoraud played for the visitors, Moya put out a team of reserves and youngsters. Goals by Kolou, Drogda, Kolotore and Domoraud himself fot the visitors, and Jonathan for the Catalans. .
4 Dec 2002 Charity match "Drogas No"
The XI annual charity game for the fight against drugs (Proyecto Hombre), traditionally hosted by the league champions. This year the match was at the Mestalla stadium where Valencia played against a team made up of the league all stars. Valencia won 3-1, with two from Salva and another from Angulo. Julen Guerrero scored for the all stars. There was a ladies match first between Levante and a selection from other teams. Ronaldo's wife didn't make it though as she was at the airport waiting for her husband.
5-7 Dec 2002 Fuerteventura tournament
Under 16 tournament featuring youth sides from Barcelona, Valencia, Las Palmas and the host island of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands. Played at Municipal stadium, Puertos de Rosario. Valencia won the tournament.
17 Dec 2002 Gallician benefit match
Deportivo La Coruña played a friendly game against players from the Costa da Morte to collect funds for the area recently hit by the oil tanker spill. Depor won 4-0, with goals from Luque, Changui, César (og) and Iván Pérez.
18 Dec 2002 Real Madrid centenary match
Real Madrid took on a "Rest of the World" team as the final act of their centenary year. The game coincided with the FIFA meeting in Madrid from 16-18 December. The All Stars took a three goal lead by half time through Klose, Kaká and Cissé, but Madrid came back to draw 3-3 with strikes by Solari (pen), Tote and Cambiasso.
27 Dec 2002 Andalucia 3 - Chile 2
La Rosaleda, Málaga. First of several regional matches due to be played over winter break. Testimonial for Fernando Hierro and referee López Nieto.

Mestalla, Valencia. Second ever game for the side, this time against a strong opposition which included Mijatovic, Stankovic, Djorovic and Paunovic in their squad.

Nou Camp, Barcelona, 21.15. China stay in the area to play other games, including Lyon (30/12), Saint Etienne (02/01), Peralada (06/01) and Girona (09/01).

29 Dec 2002 Gallician benefit match
Getafe took on a team made up of players from local Madrid based sides in benefit of Gallicia. Second division side won 5-0, with goals from Iñaqui, Alvaro Jurado (2), Fornari and Estévez.
8 Jan 2003 Espanyol 3- China 2
Friendly against Chinese squad, who stayed in the area after playing Catalonia. Clemente gave a run out to reserves and youngsters.
Goals: Oscar (Pen), Juvenal, Arteaga / Yu Tao (Pen), Yang Ling.
13-18 Jan 2003 Maspalomas tournament, Canary Isles
Annual tournament in Gran Canaria which this year featured Feyenoord, Rosenborg, Sturm Graz and Nuremburg.
29 Jan 2003 Benfica 0 - Barcelona 1
Friendly match played in Da Luz against Camacho's new side. Toño de la Cruz took charge of Barça after Van Gaal was sacked a few days earlier. The only goal came from a Mendieta free kick in the seventh minute.
4 Feb 2003 Cádiz 1 - Barcelona 2
Friendly match arranged for beginning of February when cup semi-final takes place. Testimonial for Magico Ganzález, who almost missed it as he overslept when taking a siesta. José Luis scored first for Cádiz, but Sorín equalised and Motta hit the winner near the end. Antic's first game in charge.
5 Mar 2003 Lorca 1 - Barcelona 4
Inauguration of new 8,000 seater stadium of third division side. Barça were contractually obliged to turn up with first team. Lorca also want to host under 21 side, and have invited Real Madrid in August. Scorers for Barcelona: Overmars, Riquelme (Pen), Mendieta and Sergio García.
12 Mar 2003 La Puebla de Cazalla 0 - Sevilla 13
Training match against regional side. Machlas scored four and Toedtli 3 amongst others.
26 Mar 2003 Costa Brava trophy
Piterman took his new side Racing Santander to play in this triangular tournament with Palamos and Café Opera, a second division side from Sweden. Results were as follows: Racing 0 - Café Opera 0; Palamos 0 - Racing 3 (Sarabia, Javi Guerrero, Pablo Lago); Palamos 1 - Café Opera 0. Racing were proclaimed champions.
26 Mar 2003 Atlético Madrid 2 - Real Madrid 1
Second match to promote Madrid's bid to host the 2012 Olympic games, this time in the Vicente Calderón stadium. Many stars on international duty though. Javi Moreno and Movilla gave Atletico the lead, but B team player Nuñez pulled one back for Madrid on his first team debut. Hierro and Morientes were both in the starting line up having returned from injuries.
27 Mar 2003 Toluca 3 - Valencia 1
Players not called up by their countries travelled to Mexico to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mexican champions. The central americans won the game with two from Vicente Sánchez and another from Ariel Franco. De los Santos replied for Valencia in the first half, but Mista was sent off before the just break, leaving his side with ten men for the second half.
27 Mar 2003 Celta 0 - Porto 2
Gudelj testimonial match, with Karpin, Djorovic, Celades and other ex Celta players turning up in support. Goals from Marco Ferreira and Peixoto for the Portuguese side.
28 Mar 2003 Paris Saint Germain 0 - Athletic Bilbao 2
Friendly against team managed by ex coach Luis Fernández, played in Bayonne. Athletic lost thanks to first half goals from Aloisio and Leroy. The real bad news though was an injury to Julen Guerrero.
30 Mar 2003 Espanyol 0 - Lazio 0
Friendly match to promote move to new stadium, scheduled for a couple of years' time in Cornellá, on the outskirts of Barcelona. Both sides used the fixture to try out reserves, with several players on international duty..
1 Apr 2003 Lorca 1 - Atlético Madrid 3
Luis put out two different sides, one in each half in this friendly against third division side. Goals from Javi Moreno, Stankovic and Aguilera.
2 Apr 2003 Barcelona 5 - Al-Ittihad 0
Friendly match against Libyan side which included son of Gaddafi as owner and striker. The match was a warm up for the Africans before their own Champions League tournament, and Barça charged €300,000 for the priviledge. Gerard starred with a hat-trick, and Sergio García and Motta got the other two goals.
2 Apr 2003 Athletic Bilbao 3 - Portugalete 0
Training match against Basque third division side. Goals from Azkorra, Felipe and Alaña. Gurpegui played for most of the game, his first run out since being banned for failing a drugs test.
15 Apr 2003 Gallicia benefit tournament
Real Madrid played a combined Deportivo and Celta side in the Bernabeu stadium to raise funds for the oil spill in Gallicia.
Real Madrid 3 - Gallicia 0. Goals from McManaman and Morientes (2). Diego Tristán picked up an injury and could be out for a month.
29 Apr 2003 Mallorca 0 - Cameroon 1
Friendly match, warm up for the African side prior to their participation in the Confederation cup in France. Eto'o was the star of the game, and Nadal made his first appearance for four months after returning from an injury.
7-8 May 2003 Catalunya cup semi-finals
Regional tournament between Catalan based teams.
07 May: Gavà 1 - Espanyol 0. Goal by ex Espanyol defender Herrero. for gave the second division B side victory. Oscar missed a penalty the first division team.
08 May: Terrassa 1 - Barcelona 1. Terrassa won 4-2 on penalties. Rochemback put the first division side ahead early on, but on-loan Babangida equalised. Puyol and Nano missed their penalty kicks.
08 May 2003 Inauguration of Las Palmas new stadium
Inauguration of the new stadium, "El Estadio de Gran Canaria". Las Palmas 2 - Anderlecht 1. Under 21 striker Rubén scored the first goal at their new home, and although Lovré equalised for the Belgians, N'Kong hit the winner.
05 June 2003 Getafe 2 - Atlético Madrid 1
Return of Mono Burgos not enough to stop 2A side winning.
05 June 2003 Melilla vs All Star XI
Real Madrid players McManaman, Celades and Tote played in this friendly testimonial match in Spanish enclave.
18 June 2003 Catalunya cup
Terrassa and Gavà beat Barcelona and Espanyol respectively to earn the right to play the final. Terrassa ran out winners for the second year in a row.
25 June 2003 Catalunya v Iraq
Friendly match was arranged in Barcelona as Iraq prepare for 2004 games. However this was eventually called off.
