An injury time goal from late substitute Javier Portillo saved a priceless draw for Real Madrid at Borussia Dortmund. Del Bosque's side had been trailing since midway through the first half and looked like they were in for a defeat when the manager turned to his young striker in the ninetieth minute. And virtually with his first touch of the ball he collected a pinpoint pass from Zidane to beat Lehmann from the edge of the area and keep his side a point above their opponents in second place in the table.

Matthias Sammer's side attacked right from the first minute, and Casillas had to keep his wits about him to keep out Ewerthon straight from the kick off. Lehmann saved from Raúl and Wörns blocked his shot on the rebound a few minutes later, but otherwise the Germans were on top, and Casillas made another important save from Ewerthon after Koller set him up. He could do nothing soon afterwards though when Koller collected a pass from Kehl and fired the ball past him into the net for the opening goal.

Madrid could not afford to lose this match though, and they came forward, Ronaldo feeling he was hard done by when English referee Graham Poll turned down his appeal for a penalty when Wörns brought him down in the area. The Brazilian striker had another opportunity after the restart, but this time he shot straight at the keeper with the goal at his mercy. Ewerthon put a header wide at the other end with Casillas beaten, and Lehmann pulled off the save of the night when he somehow deflected a Roberto Carlos cannonball free kick over the bar.

The introduction of Guti for Flavio provided the link that Madrid needed to connect with their front men, and he put Raúl through only for the striker to see his effort saved once again by the excellent keeper. Frustration started to creep in, Figo limped off to be replaced by Miñambres, and time seemed to be running out. Koller had a shot deflected over the bar which would have put an end to proceedings, but then Portillo came on to square the match and put his side's fate back in their own hands. They still need to beat an AC Milan side who are assured of finishing first in the group when the two sides meet in the next game, but Madrid must now be favourites to go through with them to the quarter finals.
