Barcelona set a new record
of eleven wins in a row in the competition after beating Inter Milan 3-0 in the
Nou Camp. This was Radomir Antic's first game in charge in Europe, and he stuck
to a similar side to the one he used in the league, with Gabri replacing the
cup-tied Sorín and Motta coming in for Mendieta.
Within five minutes Motta
had tested Toldo, and two minutes later Saviola put the Catalans ahead, taking
Xavi's pass and shrugging off his marker to beat the keeper. The Italians
pushed forward and looked like getting the equaliser, but just before the half
hour mark Barça went two up after De Boer headed across Xavi's corner,
Cocu poking the ball into the net after Kluivert's volley was pushed out by
Toldo.
With Recoba causing problems
from dead ball kicks and Vieri active in the area it still looked as if the
visitors would score before the break, but Bonano made some fine saves and
Reiziger cleared off the line from Di Biagio to defend their lead. Things
changed after the interval though, and Barça got back on top. Toldo was
forced to save from Overmars and Saviola, and Cocu headed Xavi's corner against
the post with the keeper beaten. Then a few minutes later Saviola got past
Cannavaro again and crossed in for Kluivert to add a third, and the game was
all over.
Inter were left with ten
men after Recoba was shown the red card for treading on Puyol's face, and a
minute later the crowd rose to their feet to welcome back Luis Enrique after a
three month lay off. For the first time in months the "olés" were heard
in the ground, and the Spaniards are now virtually ensured of a place in the
quarter finals. Van Gaal and Gaspart have gone, and Barça are back.
