A last minute goal by Roy
Makaay kept Deportivo La Coruña on track for the next round and left
Bayern Munich out of Europe competitions this season. The Dutch striker got on
the end of Capdevila's cross in the 89th minute to volley the ball past reserve
keeper Wessels and give his side a vital 2-1 victory. It was his fourth goal
against the Germans in two games, and left Bayern bottom of their group with no
chance now of even qualifying for the UEFA cup as third placed team.
For once Irureta stuck to
the same starting line up he had used at the weekend against Rayo Vallecano,
with Fran playing behind Makaay in the position usually occupied by the injured
Valerón. Munich were missing keeper Kahn, also injured, but Ballack and
Scholl were back in an all-star line up who were fighting for their life in
Europe having only taken a point from their first four games.
Scholl it was who had the
first crack at goal early on, but Depor went close when Fran hit the bar and
Víctor's follow up shot was saved. Needing a win, Hitzfeld brought on
forward Santa Cruz at half time, but it was Depor who took the lead ten minutes
into the half when Mauro Silva back-heeled a free kick to Víctor who
blasted his shot wide of Wessel from outside of the area. Santa Cruz was
looking dangerous though, and after heading just wide, he finally beat Juanmi
with another header from Scholl's cross.
Either side could have
scored as the rain started to fall, but in the end it was Makaay again who made
the difference to keep his side in second place in the table with a game to go.
A victory by Lens against a depleted AC Milan side meant that Depor are not yet
sure of a place in the second phase, but with a two point advantage for the
Spaniards, the French side will have to win in Munich to have any chance of
going through. |
