Celta were knocked out of the UEFA cup by a surprisingly good Slovan Liberec. Needing to defend a two goal lead Víctor Fernández put out a relatively strong side, although crucially he decided to leave his tired hat-trick hero from the first leg Mostovoi at home together with Cáceres. Vagner, McCarthy and Maurice also came in, with Catanha left on the bench until well in to the second half. Without Mostovoi they were lacking ideas, and Stajner headed the Czech side in front before half time from a cross from Slovan's best player Kolousek.

Víctor brought on Catanha and then Edú, but only a minute later Nezmar, who had just come on himself, headed in another cross from Kolousek which put the home side in front on the away goal rule. With Celta throwing everything forward, Nezmar added a second in the last minute and it was all over, despite an injury time header by Sergio which grazed the bar. Spain's most successful side in the UEFA cup in recent years are already out of Europe.
