Celta started their new
European campaign with a resounding victory against a Czech side who only put
up resistance in the early part of the game. Víctor Fernández
used the game to give an opportunity to some members of his squad who had not
had a chance in the league so far, with Pinto replacing the indisposed
Cavallero and Coira and Vagner also making their first starts of the season.
The Gallician side started well with Sergio heading wide, although ex Tenerife
striker Hapel could have scored at the other end with Pinto, replacing the
indisposed Cavallero, out of position. Eventually though Celta took the lead,
Karpin beating Vaniak after Coira had put in a dangerous cross into the area.
Víctor replaced an
off form Vagner with Edú shortly after half time, and things improved.
Catanha added the second from the penalty spot in the second half after Sergio
was fouled, and Edú himself got the third only three minutes later with
a shot which went through the legs of a defender. Víctor brought on
Silvinho for his first appearance in a sky blue shirt, but he only lasted a
quarter of an hour before going off injured leaving his team with ten men. Even
so Karpin got his second of the night on a counter attack in the final moment.
