Favourites Spain were beaten
in the penalty shoot out by France and are knocked out of the competition at
the semi-final stage. The youngsters had an early chance to take the lead when
Gavilán was awarded a penalty when brought down by Medjani, but the
captain put his kick wide of the goal. After that though France took charge
against Santiesteban's tired looking side, and Nauzet did well to save from
Lejeune as he cut in from the left. On the stroke of half time the left winger
advanced again into the penalty area and Alexis bundled him over. The referee
awarded another penalty, and Plessis stepped up to show how it is done with a
confident shot into the top of the net.
Spain's top scorer Jonathan
had to leave the field injured in the second half, Silva taking his place, and
as the game wore on Santiesteban went for broke, bringing on young striker
David for the last ten minutes. Alexis hit the bar soon afterwards as Spain
came looking for the equaliser, and two minutes from the end Silva rose to head
home Valero's corner, the ball deflecting in to the net off Plessis. That took
the game in to the penalty shoot out, but although Nauzet saved the first
penalty from Plessis, the French keeper Bengegnu stopped shots from Soldado and
Merino to take his side through to the final against Switzerland. It was
fitting revenge for the French, who lost to the same Spanish squad in the under
16 final a year or so ago. |
