Manny Ramjohn stadium, Maravella, Trinidad & Tobago. Spain lost their second game in group C the under 17 World Cup and now have to beat Argentina in their last game on Thursday if they are to go any further in the competition. The powerful African side had already shown they were a force to be reckoned with when they went within a minute of beating Argentina in their opening game, and they lined up with two players from French first division side Bordeaux, Madi and Aziz. Juan Santiesteban only made one change to the Spanish side, bringing in the more attacking Senel for Sergio Torres.

Right from the start the African sub-champions were content to sit back and look for the counterattack, and Moyá was called upon to save from the rapid Sanou early on. Iniesta wasted a couple of free kicks before Fernando Torres finally forced Kontougomde to make his first save, but the big Burkina Faso defence were not giving much away and the Atlético Madrid striker was constantly shadowed. Five minutes before half time Flaño instinctively put out an arm to stop a chipped pass from Aziz and Icelandic referee Kristinn Jakobsson correctly awarded a penalty which Sanou tucked away.

Sanou almost beat Moyá again in a carbon copy of his first chance, but Spain came close to equalising, first with a shot from Melli which the keeper punched away, and then a Fernando Torres header which bounced just wide of the post. Jesús was lucky not to get sent off when he took out Sanou as he charged through again, and Santiesteban threw on three substitutes to try and find a way through. But the Africans held fast, and almost extended their lead when Korabou sent two shots wide in five minutes. Spain ended the game with ten men when their captain Carlos García was carried off injured, and the players left the field dejected as the rain started to fall. They have it all to do next Thursday.
