Spain ended the European
championship in fourth spot after losing the third place play off to England.
Juan Santiesteban gave a run out to some of the players he has not used much in
the tournament, but could not count on his top scorer Jonathan who was injured
in the semi-final against France. The match remained goal-less until five
minutes before the break, when England scored twice in quick succession through
Routledge and Rooney, both goals coming from balls in from the right wing. Just
before half time though Gavilán beat Drench with a shot in off the post
to keep Spain in the game. However Rooney headed a third from Routledge's cross
early in the second half, and the Everton striker completed his hat-trick
before the end to leave Spain out of the medals. (10.05.02) |
