Champions league - quarter-finals, second leg

Real Madrid 2 (1) - Bayern Munich 0 (2)

Real Madrid battled through with two second half goals to beat reigning champions Bayern Munich and set up an all Spanish semi-final against Barcelona. It was a rainy night in the Spanish capital, but a capacity crowd turned up to cheer on their side and shout down their opponents, who had created a hostile atmosphere with their controversial comments in the press during the week. With a 2-1 result from the first leg a single goal would have taken the Spanish side through. However Morientes somehow failed to get on the end of crosses from Solari and then Figo, and after Elber shot wide at the other end, the sides went in level at the break. Zidane hit the bar with a shot early in the second half, and after a period of pressure Madrid finally got the goal they were looking for, Roberto Carlos whipping the ball in from the left for Iván Helguera to bundle it over the line with a little help from Kovac. A couple of minutes later an angry Effenberg got into an argument with the crowd after being hit by a flying object, and Figo picked up a yellow card in the ensuing argument with the referee which means he misses the next game, which will of course be in Barcelona's Nou Camp. With five minutes to go Raúl broke free on the left and crossed at the second attempt for substitute Guti to turn the ball wide of Kahn for Madrid's second goal. Salihahamidzic got himself sent off in injury time for a tackle from behind on Solari as Munich's frustrations showed. But they couldn't get the goal to take the tie into extra time, and everything is now set up for the first European meeting of Spain's two giants in 40 years, with the prize for the winner a place in the final in Hampden Park in May. Manchester Utd 3 (2) - Deportivo 2 (0)

Deportivo La Coruña crashed out of Europe after losing 5-2 on aggregate to Manchester United. It was a hard match which left David Beckham in hospital with a broken ankle and Depor's two Argentine midfielders Scaloni and Duscher both sent off for second bookable offences in the second half. Needing to turn around a two goal deficit from the first leg and with several defensive players out injured, Irureta put out a side which included Tristán, Djalminha and Valerón. However they found themselves behind when Beckham's substitute Solksjaer got on the end of Verón's free kick to poke the ball past Molina midway through the first half. Depor equalised on the stroke of half time when Blanc turned Romero's hard cross into his own net, but Solksjaer restored the lead soon after the break, shooting under Molina from a wide angle after a magnificent through ball by Verón. Giggs made it three with an individualist effort, and Van Nistelrooy hit the bar with a header before Djalminha made the score respectable with an injury time free kick. (10.04.02)

Barcelona 3 (0) - Panathinaikos 1 (1)

Barcelona fought back from behind to beat Panathinaikos 3-1 and qualify for a possible semi-final tie with Real Madrid. A goal down from the first leg, Rexach picked an attacking line up, although the big surprise was that Patrick Kluivert started the game on the substitutes' bench. Then in the eighth minute the Greeks took the lead with a shot out of nowhere from Konstantinou, an important away goal which meant that Barça had to score three to win the tie. The Catalans scored one midway through the first half, a highly motivated Luis Enrique chesting down Saviola's chipped cross to turn the ball past Nikopolidis. As the clock ticked on Rexach went for broke, bringing on Kluivert for Coco just before half time, and Luis Enrique put his side in front four minutes after the restart, heading Rivaldo's free kick past the stranded keeper. Then on the hour mark Xavi found Saviola with a defence splitting pass for him to score with a first time shot. The Spaniards were in front for the first time in the tie, but they had to suffer a nerve wracking last half hour, with Bonano being carried off on a stretcher after crashing into the ever dangerous Olisadebe and Puyol clearing off the line from Konstantinou in a series of last minute attacks from the visitors.
