Holland 1 - Spain 0
Spain lost their
friendly game against Holland thanks to a first half goal made in
Barcelona, with Frank De Boer heading home a corner from Overmars. Camacho used
the occasion to make his final trials before this summer's World Cup, bringing
in Tiko and Capi who made their debuts in the second half. Of the others who
are competing for the remaining places in the squad (the rest have almost
certainly booked their ticket), Sergio, Joaquín and De Pedro were all
given a run out from the start, and César came on at the break. On the
other bench new manager Dick Advocaat lined up with four forwards, all of whom
play or have played in Spain, and included five players from Barcelona and one
from Deportivo in his opening formation. Given the quality of the two sides the
game was disappointing, with very few scoring chances throughout the 90
minutes. Only a couple of De Pedro free kicks in the first half and one from
Diego Tristán in the second caused any problems for the Dutch keepers.
Holland fared little better though, and apart from a period of pressure leading
up to the goal they made little impact on a well ordered defence. Few
conclusions for Camacho except perhaps that he needs the class of Guardiola,
Luis Enrique and Mendieta if his team is to make any real progress this summer.
