Spanish cup (Copa del Rey) - final Real Madrid 1 - Deportivo La Coruña 2 Deportivo La Coruña spoilt Real Madrid's centenary celebrations in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, winning the 100th Spanish cup final with a superior performance over their hosts. Irureta's side surprised the league champions with a goal in the fifth minute, Sergio taking Diego Tristán's pass and cutting between Hierro and Salgado before sliding the ball under César's legs. Zidane almost levelled the scores when he headed Figo's free kick against the bar, but Tristán extended the Gallicians' lead when he turned Valerón's cross past the keeper shortly before half time. Solari came on at the break and made an early impact, feeding the ball in from the left to Morientes, who turned and squared for Raúl to pull one back from close range. Everything was set up for Madrid's come back, but Depor held on with some gritty football to win the second cup in their history and send the Madrid fans home disappointed. (06.03.02) |
