Spain drew 1-1 with Portugal
in a friendly match in Barcelona's Montjuic stadium. José Antonio
Camacho used the game to experiment with his side, bringing in Joaquín
for his first cap and starting the game with many of his young players in his
initial line up. Morientes headed a good chance wide early on, but Portugal
took the lead from a Figo free kick with half an hour gone, Jorge Costa heading
the ball over Casillas who should never have come out of his goal. Portugal's
keeper Ricardo saved from Vicente a few minutes later, but Spain drew level
through Morientes, who turned the ball past the keeper after Puyol played on
Xavi's free kick from left of the area. Camacho made five changes at the break
and four more twenty minutes in to the half, with only Nadal and Joaquín
playing the full 90 minutes. Tristán went close twice, and half time
substitute keeper Quim tipped a quick Mendieta free kick over the bar. In the
end though a fair result, and Spain have now gone 43 years since they last beat
their neighbours. They could have a chance to do so in this summer's World Cup.
